Jones Soda

"Ya gotta make a living somehow; we chose the beverage world. Good old soda made with pure can sugar. No hidden meanings, no billion dollar ad campaings, and no high fructose corn syrup. At Jones, we want you to buy a lot of soda and recycle the bottles. The labels are a kind of like our minds- always changing. Run with the little guy...creat some change. www.jonessoda.com".

I've had a secret love for Blue Bubble Gum Jones Soda for years...but it has now become a "love you outloud" kind of love :). I'm going to recycle my bottles- as flower vases :). The photos are my favorite part of the soda! I also love the caps. Today mine said "you just helped save a childs eyesight. Thank you". (Visit www.vitaminangels.org for more info).

Anyways, I just thought you all should know: I LOVE JONES SODA!!!

but...I still love Coke and have tried with no luck to find yellow cap coke :( I guess I'll keep looking :)

Momentary Lapse

I had a momentary lapse today. I was telling Matt about how healthy this HFCS diet is and talking about eating Cheerios for breakfast when I reached over and put a mini Mr. Goodbar IN my mouth! And the look on Matts face was hilarious! I ran over to the trash can and spit it out followed by a good clean rinse of water. I felt so stupid! hahaha And here is my newest love: FUZE. I really really love flavored drinks. Water is usually not enough for me. I'll drink it to keep myself hydrated but I prefer some flavor in my life! I actually had Strawberry Melon (which is not pictured below) and basically fell in love immediately. :)

So tomorrow, Matt and I have opted to pack our lunch. OH! And lucky me, I finally found some pancake syrup to eat with my waffles! (No hfcs!) yummmm anyways, I'm hoping my packed lunch tomorrow will work out for me...actually I KNOW it will.
I also found out that pre packaged Brie cheese has no HFCS. It was a happy day :)

HFCS soda?

So remember how I spoke fondly of Coke in my previous post? Well, I found something that absolutely blew me away. Pepsi, Cokes mortal enemy, produces what is called "Pepsi Natural". yay! I'm going to keep an eye out for it :)

Yay!

Happy May 1st! I'm so excited to start this new diet! I haven't eaten anything yet today but I'm planning on a bowl of cheerios with banana slices and little sugar on top :) for breakfast. yum!

This morning I've been researching what will be ok to drink and what won't be. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm pretty much addicted to Coke and that is a drink I'll miss dearly for the next 30 days. BUT this morning I've found that another favorite drink of mine is still "ok" to drink! Sobe Lizard Lava Strawberry Daquiri (and basically all SoBe drinks)!! Yay for lizards! That isn't to say I'll drink less regular water though. I try to drink a few bottles of water every day but it's good to know I wont have to give up flavor all together :). So, here's a toast to the next 30 days!

My last HFCS day.

So today is my last day of consuming HFCS for at least 30 days. And you guessed it, I'm enjoying a glass of Coke as we speak followed by a turkey sandwhich loaded with mayo :). Keep in mind, some mayo DOES come HFCS free but this brand does not haha.

So for the next 30 days, be prepared to hear about my journey through the HFCS free diet- this Saturday we are taking a day trip to Massachusetts to a zoo. We'll see how I handle the food in Mass :) So, I thought I'd leave you with a link to a list of foods I will be avoiding and giving up for at least the next 30 days- click here for the list.

See ya!

Heinz- The sign of "fine" dining.

A couple weekends ago, Matt and I took a long trip to southern Maine for the day. Along the way we stopped at a 50's themed diner where they were serving your favorite condiment and mine: ketchup. Not just ANY ketchup (catsup) though- HEINZ ketchup. I had to laugh as I read the label though. (see below)
(if the print is too small:)
"The Ketchup Experts at Heinz know that the best tasting ketchup, only comes from the best tasting ingredients."

Tomato Concentrate Made from Red Ripe Tomatoes, Distilled Vinegar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Salt, Spice, Onion Powder, Natural Flavoring.

Yes, I would have to agree. Tomato concentrate, HFCS, Corn Syrup and "natural flavoring" all taste delcious I'm sure.

Now, If I'm going to play this, I've got to play fair right? After all, Heinz did.

Heinz also makes Organic Ketchup. As you can see below.

Ok, Ok...where are the ACTUAL ingredients?

Oh. HERE they are...or are they?
The Small Print by LoopZilla.
Can someone PLEASE tell me what the "*' is next to everything? and, an even bigger question, IF Heinz has the ability to make an HFCS free Ketchup, why do they continue to make ketchup WITH HFCS? (other than monetary reasons).

As I've roamed the web looking for images and ingredients labels, one thing has remained clear to me- people LOVE Heinz Organic ketchup. In fact, a lot of what I've been seeing is that most people prefer Organic Heinz over the Regular stuff...so here is the big question- why not discontinue the regular stuff and only make the Organic brand? If Heinz is SO confident that they are the "worlds favorite Tomato Ketchup", then why would they not only supply us with an Organic brand of Ketchup. Are they afraid they would lose consumers? If they are the best, would the consumers stop buying their brand because they only make Organic ketchup? These are questions I've been asking myself as I've been researching this wonderful brand of ketchup. And I have yet to find an answer at their next to useless website.

Oh, and just thought to tell you, I've scoured the web for photos of the Heinz ketchup labels and have had a very hard time. (even at their website)...and so, I'm left to wonder what the"*" mean on the label...until I go shopping on Wednesday I suppose.

HFCS free

Hey all! So, I'm going to be embarking on a 30 day adventure/diet and I want to keep track of my progress and feelings about the diet while I'm on it. I won't be starting until May 1st but I'll be blogging about my findings until then.

High Fructose Corn Syrup. Sound yummy? No, I didn't think so. HFCS is a sugar substitute which is found in just about EVERYTHING we eat. Here's my favorite example: going to the movies. Popcorn, butter, candy, soda- even the pop corn BAGS are loaded with corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup! ew! Why are we loading HFCS into our foods? one word: money. The U.S. government (who, by the way just used your tax money to bail out a HUGE amount of banks) has decided that sugar is too expensive to put in our foods, so we pay farmers out west big bucks to grow genetically modified corn to pump into our foods. Why is this so bad? Well, I'm glad you asked.

In about the late 70's or early 80's Ocean Spray discovered they were losing money and needed a quick fix. They realized that they could subsitute HFCS for sugar without drastically changing the taste of the juice BUT it helped save them money. Since then, a LOT of companies have followed Ocean Spray's walk. But, let's think back to the increase in weight, diabetes, cancer, dymentia, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol (need I go on?) etc over the last 20 years. What is happening to our food?

Burger joints have popped up more frequently which load their foods with HFCS (which is what makes it so fast!). So now not only are we eating fatty burgers (which come from God knows where) BUT we're also loading them up with HFCS in the burger, cheese, ketchup, pickles AND bun. yummy!

Starting on May 1st I'll be embarking on an adventure to avoid all HFCS (wish me luck...I also anticipate I'll lose quite a bit of weight due to the lack of HFCS) I have recently be researching the types of foods I will be allowing myself to eat. I've got quite a long list and am able to prove that food without HFCS IS in fact a possiblity...but most companies are looking for a cheap way out.

With this diet I'm hoping to prove that the type of food we consume does have a great affect on our mood, and mental state as well as our physical state. I am also hoping to prove that eating healthy natural foods is still possible AND affordable for all.

Expect regular updates regarding my mood, what I'm eating, new things I've found about HFCS free food- AND what you can buy and where. I'm really really excited to be starting on this new diet and can't WAIT to see what becomes of it!
